All About Driving License

If you are new to the USA or to the Quad cities, one thing you certainly need is the Illinois driving license. Due to the limited public transportation and the extreme weathers, the driving license has become indispensable. It also serves as a state ID apart from letting you go places. However, there are certain requirements with respect to documents, vehicle, tests, and of course certain fees for a test. Here is an overview of the requirements for obtaining a driving license.

Intersection

Documents

The DMV certainly needs to verify your documents in order to take up the written test or road test. They need to see a valid unexpired original document from four groups. They must be most recent or within 90 days from the date applying. For example:

  1. Group A: Written Signature – Cancelled check, Major credit cards, Passport, EAD Card, I-94, Green card, Social Security Card, Current Driver’s License, State ID, and so on.
  2. Group B: Date of Birth – Passport, US Visa, Green card, EAD Card, Birth Certificate (US), Social Security Award Letter, Military ID, Naturalization Certificate, and so on.
  3. Group C: Social Security Number – Social Security Award Letter, Social Security Card, Driver’s License Record, Military ID, and so on. TVDL applicants no more required to submit a No SSN Letter. They will sign a declaration at the DMV.
  4. Group D: Residency – Bank Statement, Cancelled Check (within 90 days), Utility bill, Official mail from US Federal agency, Rental or lease agreement, Credit report, Pay stub, Electronic deposit, and so  on.

One document may satisfy more than one group. Illinois DMV does not accept photocopies. They need originals. New drivers must submit one document from Groups A, B, C, and two documents for Group D.

Vehicle

Your vehicle must be running with a valid insurance card. The vehicle must be running with all indicators working and with no problems. The vehicle:

  1. Must comply according to the Illinois Secretary of State standards
  2. Must have a valid insurance which is required before the road test
  3. Must display front and rear licence plates with unexpired license sticker
  4. Must be driven to the DMV by a driver with valid license and insurance

Tests

You are required to take a written test and a road test. At the DMV, first you have to take a token for a written test. The written test is a computer based test and covers the road signs, basic rules, seat belt requirements, and so on. You can skip a question if you think it is confusing. As soon as you answer thirty-five questions the computer will inform you that you have passed the test.

//

Then, you can take a token for road test. A tester from the DMV will accompany you on a short road course with real traffic. The tester will test if you are able to follow directions and instructions properly. They will grade you on certain key aspects such as uphill, downhill, backing from a driveway on to a road, yielding, lane changes, parking, and so on.

Fees

You are required to pay a fee for the computer test, written permit, and road test. The fee varies from $25 to $40 depending upon your age and type of test.

Make sure you have all original documents and take extra photocopies. Check the weather and road conditions before you go. Also, check the national holidays and working hours of the local DMV. It is better to go in the early hours so you can finish off early. You can expect two to three hours before the entire process is completed.

Training

If you are new to the USA or to the Quad cities, it is suggested to go through a trainer who will guide you through the entire process. The trainer with a valid vehicle and insurance card can guide you through the rules and regulations of the road. It is better to take four to five classes before you go for the road test.

All the best for your tests and experience at the Illinois DMV. They are here to help us if we have everything what they need. Let me know your experience through the comments section. Have fun driving and enjoy the new-found freedom. 🙂

H4 EAD

In the latest immigration reforms, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that they would start taking applications for H4 EAD starting May 26, 2015. While some Americans may perceive all immigrants as aliens, this particular rule is about to bring the sunshine in many peoples’ lives.

Working and driving are common privileges enjoyed by many in the USA. These privileges do not come easily for certain immigrants. Spouses of legal immigrants are not allowed to work in the USA as per the previous rules. As part of this, many lives have suffered through depression for most part of their adult life.

H4 Visa

H4 visa is granted to the spouses and children of H1 visa specialists. The H1 visa specialists are allowed for a temporary stay in the USA. H1 visa is also a dual intent visa which allows the applicants to convert their non-immigrant  status to immigrant status. Based on the waiting list and availability of visa numbers per country of origin, the wait time is typically ten to fifteen years until the H1 visa immigrant gets their green card.

However, the spouse of an H1 visa non immigrant is aware that they cannot work in the USA prior to arrival. But, they hope to get the work permits as soon as possible. The centuries of wait time without the right to work has been heavily effecting the H4 visa holders. Some have decided to return back to their home country. Some have dread along the long wait hoping for better lives.

New Rule!

According to the new rule, H4 visa holders may allowed to apply for a work permit if their H1 visa spouse have already applied for a green card and have their I140 document approved. Or, if their H1 visa spouse has been granted extension of stay beyond six years according to the AC 21 rule.

The right to work and earn has been a boon to the H4 visa holders, as this gives them the opportunity to prove their worth in terms of earning potential and have a better lives for their family. If you are a H4 visa holder or you know someone, the time has come to prepare for the change. Applicants are encouraged to polish their skills for the current job market. In addition, they are also required to pay a fee of $380 as the processing fee. They may also need the documents such as a valid passport,  valid visa, marriage certificate, H1 visa holders I797, H1 visa holders passport and visa, I140 approval document, and so on.

List

Here is the checklist you will need for applying H4EAD. Download the latest forms from the USCIS website. Make sure you take two latest color photographs and sign with a black pen inside the box. There have been rejections just for that! If you have never worked and you have no prior SSN, here is the list. It is also better to include the cover letter titled ‘Original Submission’ and list all the documents you are attaching. All are copies except the photographs and check. 🙂

  1. G115 form
  2. I765 form
  3. passport old and new all pages
  4. I94
  5. I797A
  6. I140
  7. Marriage certificate
  8. Photo 2 – name, I-94 on back(Write with pencil)
  9. Driving licence
  10. Spouse passports all pages
  11. Spouse payslips
  12. Spouse 3 yr W2s
  13. $380 – ‘U.S. Department of Homeland Security’
  14. USCIS – Address as per your WAC number
Let’s hope the new rule will allow the H4 visa holders improve their mental and financial status in the USA. This will also help the country in turn in terms of skilled resource and improved economy.

Happy New Year

Don’t let the name fool you. This movie is not about the New Year. In fact, to all the Indian readers out there, this a definite movie you have to watch. It is in Hindi, so unless you can understand Hindi or have a way of having subtitles, this is not the movie for you. To others, this movie, to me, is a 10/10 (I am an 11 year-old, so don’t put anything against me, it’s just what I think.) It is the gumbo pot of sweetness. It contains the right mixture of things, such as comedy, action, and most importantly, a good storyline. Hold on to your horses, ’cause we are in for a bumpy ride!

Synopsis

The story starts out with a man who fights at a fight-club for money. His name is Charlie. You see, Charlie has never been able to earn any money. Ever. In his life. (but he still owns a pretty sweet apartment.) In his apartment, Charlie notices the news. It reports that Charan Grover, the multimillionaire, has announced that he will be traveling to Dubai to drop off 7 priceless Mughal Dynasty-era diamonds.  Charlie, the broke fighter, realizes that this man is the same man who framed his father for stealing those same diamonds 12 years ago. Charlie quickly assembles a team of masterminds, who are also somehow related to Charlie’s father, Manohar. One of them is a retired bomb squad sergeant who deaf in one ear. He is easily insulted if he hears any meek comments about his mother, who he worships. The team is ridiculously hilarious, but they are working towards one goal: to destroy Charan Grover’s life for ruining Charlie’s father’s life. All this ends up being really funny, and as part of their heist, they have to participate in the WDC: World Dance Championship. The prize? A trophy made of pure gold, and a sample of the Mughal diamonds, and a check for $1,000,000.

Overall Review

This movie contains a lot of action, comedy, and a good storyline. I do not have a score, as it is your duty now to watch the movie and see for yourself, how this movie is. By the way, if you are also a fan of chick flicks, then this movie is also for you. It gets very emotional at times, and if you cry a lot during sad movies, please have Kleenex at the ready, for both the sad and the funny parts. 🙂

Los Agaves

For those who don’t know what Los Agaves is, it is my favorite restaurant, and it is a Mexican grill. Los Agaves currently has 4 locations, located throughout the Quad Cities, which consists of five cities (Yes I know it says “Quad”. I don’t know why it’s called that.). Here is their website. They serve all sorts of Mexican cuisines, such as tostadas, Quesadillas, seafood, and other classics, like Enchiladas and Fajitas. Examples of seafood are: Quesadilla Mazatlan (basically a ten inch thick quesadilla), Shrimp Cocktail, and Ala Diabla (grilled shrimp).

Overall, I thought the place was clean. They wrap forks and knives in napkins, too. They clean the tables the moment someone leaves. The waiters were polite, and understanding, as well (we’re vegetarians). The food was really good. Mexican heaven in my mouth!  They also have Margaritas (don’t ask how they tasted, as I’m 11. You may ask my father, however.). There is a TV lounge. Hey kids, let’s watch Honey Boo Boo while eating a Quesadilla! Not that I’m complaining. There is also a special song they sing for you if it’s your birthday. It is in Spanish, so don’t ask me for the lyrics. As they sing this song you have to wear a sombrero. It looks silly, but I ponder now if that is the whole point. The range of desserts are very very very good. Some examples are Ice cream, Churros, and Fried Ice Cream. Some drinks are Coke, Tea, Lemonade, and Coffee.

Now to the business-y stuff. When you pay, you can pay the bill at the counter and you can also pay the tip at the same place. For people who love those mints from restaurants, they always keep a huge bowl of those at the counter. They have toothpicks as well. Just in case. The prices there range from $3 to $35, so it is surprisingly cheap.

Temporary Visitor Drivers Licence (TVDL) New Updates

Continuing my articles about Temporary Visitor Drivers License (TVDL), here are some updates based on the new government regulations. You may not need some documents any more but still have to visit the nearest DMV office which processes your TVDL.

P1020721

Non visa Undocumented TVDL

TVDL is issued to temporary visitors to the United States in order for them to carry out their day to day chores. It may not be the same license issued to the Social Security Number (SSN) holders. Illinois started issuing TVDL for non visa undocumented drivers since January 2013. The documents required will  be address proof, consular card, twelve months of residency in Illinois and any current driving license from the same state or other state.

Your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be able to process your DMV for non visa TVDL. Drivers are requested to schedule an appointment online through the website of Secretary of State. You can also call the toll free number and schedule an appointment. 855-236-1155. However, there are limits on the number of attempts you can make an appointment. After the documents are verified, you may require to take a vision test, computer test, and road test. If you are renewing your license, you will require only vision test. Your TVDL will be issued at a later date after completing a facial recognition background check.

Visa TVDL

TVDL is also issued for drivers with valid visa who do not have a social security number. Earlier, they were required to submit a SSN denial letter along with the documents. This document is not required anymore. You will still need two proofs of address, unexpired passport, I94, valid visa document. If you do not have two address proofs, a certificate of residency from a person with a valid SSN is also accepted. Visa TVDL will also be issued two weeks later after facial recognition check. You will be given a temporary driving permit which will let you drive until your TVDL arrives in mail.

While some may be totally unaware of this process, it is a good opportunity for drivers. It is also a cumbersome process to get a TVDL. After all the effort, a TVDL can be used only for driving purposes. It is not a valid identification for boarding airplanes or entering a federal facility. Uninsured drivers or drivers with DUI may face severe punishments or suspension of TVDL. Also, check in other states if your TVDL is valid there.

Let me know how your experience with the DMV went and share your license routines. 🙂

Insurance Totals Your Car: That’s not the end of the world

If you were in a wreckage recently, the insurance may declare your car is totaled. Okay, that is a bad news but may not be the end of the world. Getting a comprehensive coverage and rental reimbursement is your next step before shopping for the new car.

Car Totaled!

It may be pretty shocking to hear the news but you may have to let the vehicle go. It may be dear one for you which gave you a long company and assistance in all conditions and weathers. However, if the insurance decides that the cost to repair the vehicle is more than the market rate, they will decide to total your car.

Most insurance offer a replacement car for a similar make and  model in your area. Others, may offer you a settlement amount. Your negotiation skills must come in handy while negotiating for the amount. The insurance adjuster may have a long queue and have a long wait times before they can get to your claim.

Remember that it is your responsibility to follow up with the insurance and adjusters to process the claim. Make sure you do your homework before negotiating a settlement amount. Kelley blue book, NADA guides, carport and autotrader are some of the websites which let you decide the amount of your vehicle depending upon the mileage and year of the model. If you have any repairs or towing reimbursements, make sure to mention the same with the adjuster.

You may keep the vehicle by buying it back from the insurance, but may have to deal with the repairs. If you have a loan on the vehicle, the insurance will pay the titleholder bank first and get you the remaining amount. You may have to sign a Power of attorney to clear the amount.

Insurance Components

Driving an automobile is very simple and at very risky at the same time. Sometimes, you may be involved in an accident for no fault of yours. Floods, blind spots, fire, falling trees, bad weather are also some of the reasons a vehicle may be damaged beyond repair. Most insurance buyers aim for collision coverage but may overlook such incidents. Although it is going to cost you more, it is better to add the comprehensive coverage to your auto insurance.

Next, essential component is adding rental reimbursement in case your car is totaled. You will need an alternate car while the body shop or dealer is looking at your car’s damage. It may take some time to get a new car or alternate option. Some insurance do offer rental reimbursement up to a certain amount per day.

You may also want to add Emergency roadside assistance to your policy in case you have a minor or major accident. The roadside assistance may come in handy in case of a minor breakdowns such as flat tire or battery down. It also is useful in case of a major accident in order to tow your vehicle.

It is an unexpected loss when your car is totaled, but you have to remember that you and family members are safe and start shopping for a new vehicle.

Hack Run

Ever wondered what hackers do? Ever wonder, like, how they hack? How they do it? I hate saying this, but “There’s an app for that.” I know, I know. But, seriously. There is an app for that. It’s called Hack Run.

Technically, all it is that it is about a hacker war that turns out ugly. You start out with minimal experience, of course. (I seriously doubt a real hacker would waste their time playing this game, anyway. They’d find a hack within the hacking game. It would sort of be like Inception. A hack in a hack in a hack in a hack. Not cool.) When I say minimal, I mean minimal. The average person would know how to type, at the most. That’s what happened to me. I typed some random things, until I typed ‘help’. That’s when my “adventure” started.

All the game is about is that you’re a hacker looking for a client. That is, up until you meet Larry. Larry becomes your client/boss. He tests you at first, doubting your skills. Then later on, he realizes your importance in the hacking community. Again, up until “The Incident”. There you are, happily hacking your butt off, and you suddenly realize that you’ve hacked in someone’s account by the name of Larry. You don’t connect the dots and look at his files, steal everything that you can. Then you get an e-mail. From Larry. Your boss. Larry is angry at you for hacking into his account. At first you have no idea what’s going on. Then you connect the dots. Larry ends firing you, and you’re back where you’re started. Client-less.

That last paragraph was a summary of what happens in the first half of the game. There are 52 levels, and I encourage you to try it out. I mean, why not?

Going Away Gifts

If you know someone who is leaving and you may not see them for ever again, it is better to present a going away gift. That may help cherish and remember the memories. Since it is a small world, there are still chances of seeing them in the circle of life.

Going away gifts or send off gifts vary from simple gift cards or personalized memorabilia. A picture of them with you can be a good gift or a personalized message on a cup is good too. You may give them a gift card to the store they like, but they may not have access to the store or online shopping. A simple greeting card would serve the purpose of getting your message across.

P1020529

A wall painting with flowers or pets is a good choice if they are nature lovers. A craft kit or a do it yourself kit may engage them for a while at the new place. Be sure they have enough place for your gift in their luggage. Or you may overload them with the bulkier items.

Ready to eat food items, chocolates, pastries may be gifted to use instantly but cannot be stored long time. You can think about what they like most or what your vision for them would be and gift the items. Remember that they are overwhelmed by the leaving and may not process the emotion behind your gift right away. But, may be when they look it back it at later they may find it sweet.

A humorous quotation, art, story or, poem may also help you transfer your message. It will be a pleasant experience for you and the receiver if you do not make a lot of fuss about your gift. You can keep it simple and sweet and keep the encounter memorable.

iOS 8

OK, so Apple announced in their new WWDC that they’d be releasing a new software update for iOS devices. That’s right. iOS 8 was just announced in WWDC 2014 in San Fran’s Moscone West. They had said that there would lots of improvements that are on the same iOS 7 interface. Apple also announced their new “Continuity” feature, which allows you work on a device, then if you want to work on an another one, you can just click the app and it will launch, but it will allow you keep working on as normal as possible and as smooth as possible. Apple also says that this will work on any device working on iOS 8 or for computers, OS X Yosemite.

As for changes, Apple announced a new Enterprise feature, which allows businesses to configure their Apple devices to their liking to distribute to their employees. As I watched this being announced, I realized that this part of the Developer conference got the most applause. I was surprised.

Well, this concludes this blog. If you have any questions, follow me on twitter at @PierceWrightp81.iOS 8

Visiting a New Born Baby

Visiting a new born baby may be exciting for you and the parents as well. But be prepared and do not be surprised if you do not even get to look at the baby during your visit.

Timings

Any new born in the family or friends may tempt you to go visit them. Dropping by is just rude and it is always better to take an appointment to get the suitable time for the new parents. Ask if the parents need any thing to be brought along from the store and may offer to get it.

Remember that the new parents are overwhelmed with the baby and the delivery process. The taking care of the baby and adjusting to the routines is a new effort for the parents. They might be already busy with the doctor appointments for the baby and mother. So, it is better to ask for a suitable time.

What to take

You may take some baby gifts or clothes. You can ask if they prefer some brands or products. It is always good to take some sweets and flowers. Food is appreciated and the new parents do not mind the extra delicacies you bring. Consider their allergies and diet restrictions. They may take some time off from cooking of you take some lunch, dinner or snacks with you.

It would be nice if you take a gift to the siblings or a pet so that they may not feel left out during your visit.

What to talk

Sometimes, the parents are so exhausted that they may not be able to focus on your personal stuff. It is better to discuss about how cute the baby is or about the baby’s resemblance. It is suggested to listen to the parents rather than bragging about your own delivery and child birth. That may be a conversation starter but during your visit you can focus on their stories.

Commenting too much on the baby may be considered a bad omen for the baby in some customs. So, it is better to be neutral. Offer to clean your hands and feet before touching the baby. If the baby or mother is sleeping, let them take their time of rest. If it is time for baby’s feeding, you can excuse yourself politely.

In all, the visit can be pleasant for you and the family if you are prepared and avoid any embarrassment. Let me know how your experience went. 🙂

Middle Schooler Equals Smart Cranky and Sensitive

You never understand whether to appreciate a growing up middle school kid or to resent the cranky argumentative. The sharp contrast signs of a smart child versus aggressive debater of a pre-teen child is a normal.

Elementary school leaves behind a world when your child enters the middle school. Now, your child is capable of handling more work and responsibility. Has grown up physically and is able to handle more physical and mental challenges. Middle school provides opportunities for the child to explore more about self and know the strengths and weaknesses. They are now smart enough to make their own decisions and choices. They are able to handle the changes in their bodies and minds. They can acknowledge the changes happening to their friends too. Everything seems perfect. Not yet.

Middle school success also brings a lot of confidence in children. This may cross the boundaries some times and may lead to questions. Such as, why I have to brush my teeth, why I need to take bath, why do I have to do the work, why I have to listen to you and blah blah blah. Voila, welcome to the new child. These questions would have been made sense from the elementary child perspective. But, you may wonder why a middle schooler is asking these questions. Well, now you may have to take some patience stand and repeat the answers carefully as you would to do the elementary child. You may have to remind the basics again and review the guidelines again. Remember, now you can no way shove the questions or hush the child. You may have to reason and explain more to the now grown up midde schooler.

Mostly, there would be no difference between the elementary child and a middle school or a high school child. But, they may show some extremely adult like choices and conversations in the pre-teens. And sometimes go back to the elementary child like arguments. Sometimes, you may be bewildered by their explanations and overwhelmed by their accomplishments. And yet sometimes you will be shocked as why you have to explain the little things. Remember that they are now more smarter and equipped with better knowledge and skills. So, you have to take a firm approach on the rules and consequences. Do not let your love for them influence their ability to get-away with the mistakes. However, it is equally important to appreciate the good behavior and achievements to encourage further.

Watch out for any signs of abuse, depression or bullying. You can give positive suggestions and neutral feedback to help them take better decisions. Pre-teens are emotionally more vulnerable and susceptible to anger. They need your love and support more than ever. Show some concern and care and shower some hugs and kisses. They will be your sweet kids again. 🙂

Getting older, Feeling younger? You are not Alone

Deny the grey hair and ignore the growing children. Are you old enough to be old. How old are you feeling. It is a universal feeling that people do not feel as old as they really are. Men tend to push-up old age until 60s while women may feel old as soon as they see the grey hair. Anyhow,
You are not alone in the ‘growing old – feeling young’ phenomenon. The whole world is with you!

As per the saying, ‘you are as old as you feel’, there is no limit on when you actually decide to be old. While the age may catch up and delay your physical abilities and features, your heart may feel ten to fifteen years younger. Or you may be stuck up in the twenties as well.

Well, according to the people around you and per the social rules, you are expected to behave according to your age. That is very well true. But how far can you pretend to be like that
when you are not actually feeling that way. Your actions and talking may reflect your wisdom and experience but it is possible you have never realized that you came so far.

For some people it is also possible to feel ten years older at times and fifteen years younger at times. Further, when you compare the people born in the same year, you may be shocked to see how old they look! Perhaps, you also will realize some day that you have grown up at last.

You may also deny that many people have passed away in the recent years and the young ones born are already going to school. In the immediate family, you may have so many additions and losses without realizing how far you have come. People may look at you as a role model or an example in their lives, but you don’t feel that old yet.

The feeling is common particularly around holidays and special occasions such as .. Hmm, The birthdays. Your child might be bewildered at how old are you and how out dated you are, you keep denying the fact. That’s quite common as well. Sometimes, you might also wonder when did science and technology become so advanced that you are taken aback by it.

It is also important to have a purpose and a job to keep you occupied. Further, do not stop enjoying the life and appreciating the blessings in your life. Some volunteering and some spiritualism also may help in the moral satisfaction part.

Okay, so all the young people out there, don’t worry about the age. Keep doing what you want to and what you are supposed to and the age won’t bother you. Stay young at heart and stay happy. Don’t forget the healthy diet and frequent exercise which can really keep you young. You will catch up someday. 🙂

Is early marriage the only solution

Recently, the Chief Minisiter of Haryana in India made a statement early marriage of girls is the solution to avoid rapes. As if molestation and abuse of women would stop with just marrying. Rapes and abuse of women go unnoticed and unsolved though it is a major security issue to the society itself. The developed nations with strict laws and advaced law enforcements also are facing this emabarassing issue.

Women have been playing the equal in the world starting from the evolution of human beings. They have been taking up multi tasks such as the unique task of child bearing, raising good citizens, taking care of the family members, educationg self and society. Modern women have been exploring careers in every field and there has been no limit for their achievements. But, in every field women are so vulenerable due to thier natural shyness and soft nature.

World has seen many women leaders and exemplary behaviors. But, I’m sure all those women too must have faced some discrimination due to their gender. Families and soceity do recognise the importance of the girl’s role in the growth. They are willing to educate the girl child and let them explore their dreams. Governments are providing 30 percent reservation for women in all fields. But, are we educationg them enough to handle the pressures of exploitation and abuse.

Families and governments should encourage the victims of rape and abuse to come forward and report. It is unjust that the culprit roams away freely and the victim has to suffer the abuse throughout the life. There must be strict enforcements and punishments in the society for such offenders. To be able to get away from the offense will help the rapisits to commit more crimes and torture more women.

Awareness of abuse has increased in the society. School children are being encouraged to stand up and talk about the abuse and report to the elders and school authorities. Various graphical demonstrations and  methods of abuse are shown to children to let them know what exactly is getting abused mean. But, the children are being helpless in the cases where immediate family members themselves are abusing the children. In those cases, to avoid embarassment even the reported cases are going unpunished due to societal pressures.

Just marrying at an early age will not solve the problem. What if the attacks continue after the marriage. How badly the society is changed that they gang rape a woman and spread the video of it on the internet. We all should be ashamed of such people. Why we are letting them get away is a constant burning question. The basic mindset of the society and men has to be changed through awareness programs and law enforcement. To respect women and treat them with proper etiquette and having the fear of getting punished is a must for all men.

Sometimes, I wonder why are we turning in to animals after all this development and scientific advancements. Where is the basic control of the mind and why is it okay to do whatever we want. We have been given freedom to pursue our dreams and make our fortune but are we allowed to mistreat others?

Choosing the First Instrument

The most crucial decision for a parent is to chose an instrument for their kid. Whether to take up band or orchestra, or which instrument would be appropriate for the child is a main concern. It is suggested that the child and the teacher decide as they would be the experts and people involved.

Instrument

If your child has musical talent and wants to pursue an instrument, it is better to continue. Encouraging children in their interested areas would motivate them and enhance their confidence. Music and art are mostly perceived as extras and not given that importance in most families and schools. However, music and art will indeed boost their confidence and in turn enhance the academic and atheltic skills of students.

Here are the key areas to be considered while choosing the instrument:

  1. Height of the child
  2. Length of the fingers
  3. Capability to blow air
  4. Interested instrument
  5. Teacher’s suggestions
  6. Weight of the instrument
  7. Manageability of the instrument
  8. Cost of the instrument
  9. Renting options available
  10. Accessories required

After choosing the instrument, daily practice is required. Maintaining a calendar and sticking to it would be a good rule. Taking care of the instrument and handling it properly are also necessary. Encouraging children while enforcing the practice sessions is better for continuity. Have fun with the instruments and upcoming musicians. 🙂

Road Trip to South Dakota and Wyoming

Travel enlightens us or may bring up our inner talents. So, we decided to set on a summer trip to South Dakota and Wyoming. Though the popular attractions were Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota and Yellowstone in Wyoming, the other attractions along are also great. The entire trip was relaxing with many new experiences and awesome sceneries. Attractions apart just driving and spending time with family is rejuvenating. Here is a typical itinerary.

Planning

One may need ten to twelve days in all to visit both the states, though it could be completed in eight. It is suggested to set a limit of 500 miles per day and drive accordingly. The basic rule of the road trip would be take rest for every three to four hours and fill up the gas once the tank is half. Taking home food reduces cost and time for the breaks. Preparing and planning advance meals may be a good idea. Many instant foods and microwaveable dishes can be easily prepared within minutes. Carrying drinks, milk, curd, and other perishable items in coolers is a good idea. Hotels are available throughout the I90 and I80. It is better to pick up a walk in coupon rate and book it in advance. If you are a member of a chain of hotels you can accumulate points by booking through them. Ofcourse, you need a good camera to capture the wonders and smiles.

Travel

The travel may be sorted day wise or attraction wise.

Day 1: Drive eight hours to Mitchell, SD. Stop at Sioux Falls, SD to visit the famous falls where the Sioux river takes multiple falls in that area. The falls are not that big but is a good stop. You can stop by the sculpure garden at Montrose to view the giant bronze sculptures in the Porter Sculpture Park. Take a night rest at Mitchell and visit the world’s only corn palace. It is a free attraction open to general public. Corn palace is decorated with over 19 different colors of corn grown in and around the area. It was built to encourage people to come and settle down in South Dakota and that there is a possibility for agriculture.

Every year a different theme for the palace is submitted and selected by the local people. The theme for 2012 was ‘Youth Activities’ showcasing different sports. The annual corn festival also hosts different music and food events. There is a free video show that may be education for all of us. The entire visit to the corn palace takes two to three hours. The surrounding buildings may be visited if you have enough time.

Day 2: Drive about four hours to the Badlands National Park. The stop at Chamberlain, SD where you cross the Missouri river will give a good view of the area. In the drive so far, you may have seen green plains, corn fields, and windmills. But, once you cross the Missouri river, the view is completely different. The giant mountains are so overwhelming and may seem to consume you. 🙂 Be prepared to see the cattle also. You may stop at the 1880s town to see the original buildings restored from 1880s. The museum can be visited for the artifacts of the ancient times.

Badlands National Park is a part of the national parks. The entry fee is $35. The badlands are formed millions of years ago and the Lakota people called the area as ‘bad land’ because it was having no water and no food. The Badlands is formed when sedimentary rocks are eroded over a period of time. The entire drive through the Badlands will take three to four hours. Attend a ranger led program at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center or take a trail in the Badlands or spend a sunrise or sunset. You will be ‘Wow’ed by the area and the hidden landform. There is an active Indian reservation at that area. Camping is allowed at the Badlands at a minimum fees.

When you exit the Badlands make sure you visit the famous Wall Drug store in Wall. The place is famous for the free water early business men offered to encourage visitors. Currently, there is a shopping complex with food and water.

After the Wall Drug, you have two options to stay. If you are a city person, you can drive to Rapid city. Rapid city has good attractions such as the museums and dinosaur park. Its vicinity to airport and Indian restaurants make it a famous stopover. If you are a country person you can stay at the Custer State Park cabins. Custer State park is home for the granite peaks, scenic drives, and wildlife.

Day 3: Explore the Custer State Park and its wildlife. Greet the bisones, zebras, deers, prong horn sheep, and many birds in the park. Do not feed the animals but let the donkey lick your car begging for food. :)Visit the lakes in the area such as the Sylvan lake. Get acquainted with the wild life and nature in the area and have a peaceful stay. Visit Custer city for other ancient attractions.

The faces of George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson were carved in the mountains. The wall inscriptions of the different states is a good photo spot. Also, stop before reaching the monument at the Granite point to take a picture of just George Washington in the Needles Highway. It took fourteen years to build it and was named after Charles Rushmore, the business man to visit the place. The memorial has a President’s trail and a museum with the working models.

Visit the President’s wax museum and other centers in Keystone. The famous 1880 train and Alpine slide at the bottom of the hill is fun for the kids.

Day 6: You can visit Hot Springs south of the Custer State Park for the water park and the beach. You can also visit the Devils Tower National Monument on the I90. The drive to Wyoming in the Rocky Mountain range will take you through the prairies, grasslands, and wildlife. The Thunder Basin National Grassland is home to to different wildlife. You will also encounter hundreds of oil rigs along the highway. The Black Thunder thermal coal mine offers free trips throughout the year but you may need an appointment.  The drive through Casper will take to the highest elevations and through different kinds of mountains and rock formations. Dubois or Riverton will be the next best stop closest to the Grand Teton National Park.

Day 7: Stay at Jackson or camp at the national parks for a different experience. Visit the Grand Teton National Park and the visitor centers. There are many ranger led programs which can give us some information about the place. The Grand Tetons is the  mountain range formed thousands of years ago. Just looking at the mountains and standing there will engulf you in the natural beauty. Take a hike to the Inspiration point at an elevation of 7500 feet and 6.5 miles one way from the park. Do see the Hidden Falls along the way. Take a bear spray with you or keep singing songs to keep the bears away while you are hiking. 🙂 Wildlife viewing along the highway and in the mountains is a good opportunity. The view of the Jackson river from atop the mountains is breathtaking. Capture the mountains during different times of the day and get wowed by the nature.

Day 8: Drive to the Yellowstone National Park which is a home for the active volcano. It has over 500 of the world’s 900 geysers. The bubbling hot springs, evaporating sulfur, reoccurring geysers, bubbling mud volcanoes, and thousands of wildlife make the place most valuable in all seasons. Drive the inner loop along the different visitor centers and geysers.

Hike the trails around the geysers in the geyser basin to get a better idea. The Old Faithful is a reoccurring geyser and shoots hot water up to 150 feet for every one hour. Watch the Old Faithful erupt and predict the next time based on the long, short, or medium duration of the eruption. Take a dip in the hot springs or fish in the Fisherrman’s village. Explore the wildlife during the dusk when they are pretty active. The upper falls and lower falls of the Yellowstone river are a great visit in the grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Take your time in the park and enjoy the nature. If you are lucky, you may encounter a grizzly bear or a black bear. 🙂 There is also a chance of a coyote or fox!

Day 9: Visit the Jackson Hole village and take the cabin ride to the top of the Mt. Rendezvous at an elevation of 10, 000 feet. Whitewater rafting on the Snake river is a good activity if you have enough time. Horseback riding in the mountains is also a good activity. Once you are done with the activities, you can start driving back home. The nearest stop down the mountains is Rock Springs. Encounter the cowboys and cowgirls during your stay in Wyoming. You can see many horses and ranches along the roads for a good picture opportunity.

Day 10: Drive back home is long but gives you a completed and successful feeling for having visited and completed all the planned attractions. You may stop at Cheyenne in Wyoming. You can visit the museums or zoos in the areas. You can continue your drive to Colorado Springs for more mountains or head back home for the plains. 🙂 The next stop options would be North Palatte or Kearney in Nebraska.

Day 11: Drive back home safely. You may stop at Omaha Nebraska for good food or Des Moines for the water activities. Iowa city also has good restaurants. The drive through Nebraska takes us through the plains and plenty of cattle.  Modify your trip according to the drive time or time spent at the attractions. Minor adjustments may require depending on the weather.

Overall, the trip to South Dakota and Wyoming would be refreshing to see the pure mountains and lakes. Pick up a hotel with free wi-fi so that you can upload your day pictures to share with your friends. Enjoy your trip and let me know if you have any additional tips. 🙂
